Episode 365: I’m Talkin…Power
I’m Talkin’ episode 365 for April 13th, 2025.
This is Joel from the I’m Talkin’ microcast, where I share my thoughts on a topic that has piqued my interest this past week.
This week, we’re talking power.
So there’s lots of uses for the word power.
Maybe a lot.
I thought of a few.
The first one that came to mind because of who my father is, is electricity.
Because my dad worked in the electric industry, power for cities and power poles and all that kind of things for years.
In fact, just slight note, we were not allowed to call them telephone poles because that’s not what they were.
They were power poles that allowed the telephone company to use for their lines also.
So a couple other things that I thought of in that was like extra ability, maybe the power to do something, to pull something off that might be maybe even a little extraordinary.
And then another use of the word that is very common, I think, is rule over, as in the power to tell someone else what to do.
It’s kind of a manager role maybe that someone has given you that power.
And in that lies the challenge for those of us who call ourselves Christians.
So today’s word comes from John 19, 11 that says, Jesus said to him, you would have no power over me at all unless it was given to you from above.
So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.
So you see right off that the person that Jesus is talking to, which is probably pilot at this point, I should have done some history, but I’m pretty sure that’s true.
And Jesus is letting him know that there is one source of real power and that comes from above.
He’s talking about the power that God has, his sovereignty, his rule over the universe.
And so we know that we have a single source of real power and that comes from God.
And so while we see that in this verse and Jesus is saying he recognizes where the power comes from as Christians, we have the challenge to do the same.
So there’s restrictions that we have on the power that God has given us.
We have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
And so we have that unlimited source of power there, but there’s a restriction to how we can use that, often limited by our faith.
But the other thing it does is gives us a freedom to live a life that is full of joy and happiness and fulfillment because we have that power inside us.
And then third, it allows us to live a life of humility because as the movie says, with great power comes great responsibility.
And so in humility, recognizing the power that we have that only comes from above, we get to live a life that’s full of joy.
And that is better than any other life that you may choose to live.
Until next week, this is Joel from the I’m Talking microcast.
