Episode 378: I’m Talkin…Think

I’m Talking, episode 378, for July 13th, 2025.

This is Joel from the I’m Talking microcast, where I share my thoughts on a topic that has piqued my interest this past week.

This week, we’re talking think.

Think is a pretty common word.

I’m not sure it needs a definition, but you know, when I was thinking about the word, it’s like, this is the thing that we want others to do.

It’s like, why did they do that?

What were they thinking?

And we wonder about what’s running through their minds.

A lot of times that applies to children because we have a hard time understanding their point of view, maybe.

And then oftentimes we are self…

Well, what’s the word I’m looking for?

Basically, we’re chiding ourselves for what we were thinking and why did we do that?

And what were you thinking in the moment that you did that?

And we always seem to want to be better at thinking through things.

And therein lies the challenge for those of us who call ourselves Christians.

Today’s word comes from Philippians 4, verses 8 and 9, where it says, And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing.

Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right and pure and lovely.

Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me, all you heard me say and saw me doing, and the God of peace will be with you.

So that scripture says, finally, and one last thing, and it talks about where we place our thoughts, how we think.

The word think comes from think of things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

And then right before that, it says, fix your thoughts.

So this is how you think on what is right and pure and lovely and true and honorable and admirable.

Such high, lofty goals for how we think.

This is what God wants us to do.

And that’s why it’s a challenge for those of us who call ourselves Christians, because it’s often hard to think in a world that we live in in these terms.

But if we do that, if we are able to think of the lovely, to think of the pure, to think of the things that are excellent and praiseworthy, there’s a great benefit that comes from being able to think that way.

And that is that the God of peace will be with you.

So never does God ask us to do things without something being a benefit to who we are and what we are and why we call ourselves Christians.

So a challenge this week.

Think on those things, pure, lovely, right, honorable, admirable, true, and lovely.

Maybe I repeated myself a couple of times.

Think of things that are excellent and worthy of praise, and the God of peace will be with you.

Until next week, this is Joel from the I’m Talking microcast.
