Episode 425: I’m Talkin…Skill
I’m Talkin’, episode 425 for June 7th, 2026.
This is Joel from the I’m Talkin’ microcast, where I share my thoughts on a topic that has piqued my interest this past week.
This week, we’re talking skill.
I think in the world that we live in that skill is a desired commodity.
Just something that you can do maybe just a little bit better than other people that make you useful to something, to someone, to some process, to some project.
And then I also think oftentimes skill is very admired, especially for those of us who enjoy professional sports.
And while we have played many of the sports that we watch, we have never had the skill level that we see from the professional athletes.
So there’s an admiration that goes there.
But the fact is that this skill is not something that you are born with.
It is something that you acquire.
And therein lies the challenge for those of us who call ourselves Christians.
Today’s word comes from Hebrews chapter 5, verse 14 that says, solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.
I always say this is a great verse.
And then you realize that God wrote the entire Bible.
So if there’s a not great verse in the Bible, then it’s probably my problem, not someone else’s.
But still, this again is a great verse.
And the thing is that it challenges us to be people of skill.
It is not something that comes naturally.
The word in the verse says that you have to train to acquire that skill.
And not only that, but oftentimes you have to reach a level of maturity to gain that skill.
And that’s true in everything that we see.
There is a skill that a young child might have that develops.
And over time, you see something that is vastly better than what they had before.
So what does God ask us to do?
He asks us to measure our maturity by training so that we can have the skill to know the difference between right and wrong.
Not on our own, but because of the time we spend in his word, because of what he’s able to teach us.
We are seeking out the things of his word so that we have the skill to live a life that pleases him.
Until next week, this is Joel from the I’m Talking Microcast.
