Episode 436: I’m Talkin…Depend
I’m Talkin’, episode 436 for August 23rd, 2026.
This is Joel from the I’m Talkin’ microcast, where I share my thoughts on a topic that has piqued my interest this past week.
This week, we’re talking depend.
We live in a very self-reliant time of history, I think, and just kind of the nature of the communities and environment that we are raised in, that, you know, we want to be able to do things on our own, that the individual is raised to a level that is above everything else.
And so learning to depend on someone else is very difficult because many prove to be untrustworthy when we depend on them, and it makes us lack confidence in that.
And therein lies the challenge for those of us who call ourselves Christians.
Today’s word comes from Proverbs 3, verses 5 and 6, that says, Trust in the Lord with all your heart.
Do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in everything you do, and he will show you which path to take.
So the main words in this set of verses, the first is trust, and then the second is depend, and then it says seek, and then it doesn’t say the word listen, but it says that when you do those first three things, God will show you which path to take.
So we are not to be self-reliant.
It says, Do not depend on your own understanding.
As Christians, we’re filled with the Holy Spirit, and he helps us understand God’s will.
He helps us understand God’s word as we read it, to apply it to our lives.
And then we also know from Scripture that God has a proven track record.
He keeps his promises, and we know that.
The verse last week said, I praise God for what he has promised, and this just ties so beautifully into this set of verses as well.
And it says, Do not depend on your own understanding.
Lean on the Holy Spirit.
Be ready and willing to take God’s word and his lead.
It says God is ready and willing for us to do that.
He’s ready to show us the path that we need to take.
We just need to learn to depend on him, not on ourselves.
We need to learn to depend on his word, not on the people speaking in our ear.
We need to learn to not be independent.
Until next week, this is Joel from the I’m Talkin’ microcast.
